I went to the county ESDA meeting last night. Basically from what I gathered, it has been defunct for the past three years and they are now trying to restructure. It was an interesting meeting. As I understand it, in the old days of "Civil Defense" during the cold war, each township had its own ESDA unit, which answered to a county-wide ESDA unit. I'm thinking this time around it will be different... Less focused on individual township units and more towards just a loose county unit.
Most of the people attending the meeting were either firefighters or EMT's, with a few town officials and very few regular citizens. It seems though, that the regular citizens are what they need most, because fire and EMS would have prior obligations during an emergency. Either way, you're still going to be onscene. But anywho, it seems they're interested in people with four wheel drive trucks, snowmobiles, and ATV's, for such volunteer services as bringing food to the elderly and infirm trapped in snowbound houses out in the boonies. People to go stormspot. Assistance with filling sandbags at flood disasters. That sort of thing.
If you want to get in on it, let me know. Hell, it could even be as simple as volunteering to cook a hot meal for someone during a snowstorm. I dunno. I'll probably go to a follow-up meeting if they have one. I don't know of all the people who attended which were actually really gung ho about the whole situation and which ones were blowing smoke.
Boy that Paul guy sure was an ass. But I always have fun with people like that. It keeps things interesting for a couple of days. He e-mailed me again with blurbs for Art, Junior, Gary, and Bryan, but I wanted to update so I didn't post it again.
The message was just more of the same crap really. Aside from the fact that he is obviously blind (what with me being probably the best looking person in the world), he did admit though that it was immature to have e-mailed me in the first place, but attributed it to boredom and how fun it is to "watch us all get worked up."
Right. I did leave up all our comments though, so you can read them if you wish.
The flooding down the road from me is getting pretty bad. Its roughly up to the level of the road, and that bridge is at least ten or twelve feet above the bottom of the creek. I'm worried that one day someone is going to be flying around that curve and end up at the bottom of the creekbed. I have absolutely no wish whatsoever to be walking through my woods one day and stumble upon a half submerged vehicle with bloated corpses inside.
One thing I would like to do in the future, perhaps after all the spring rains, is take a kayak (I would first have to purchase a kayak) from my backyard, and paddle all the way down the flooded creek and into the Iroquois River. I think that would be a fun adventure, if not a little dangerous. Although I am an excellent swimmer and I never wear a lifejacket when I go out on the water, I think I would for that excursion.
