I had a nice birthday. Three cakes! Can you believe it? Kelly made me a double layer chocolate cake (I found this particular cake in the fridge with a slice already taken out), Mom made me a vanilla cake, and Suzanne made me a cake with my "M" on the top in gum drops. You can click here to see a picture of Corky (my cat) trying to take a bite.
Two very important gifts have also had my attention. First being a deep fryer... something which I've had my eye on for quite awhile now. When I first moved into my house, I was on a random grocery shopping trip (most of my grocery shopping trips were random, meaning I knew I had a few essential items to buy, the rest were all just impulse purchases of whatever looked good or interesting). There I was, carousing down the isles, when I came across batter mix for deep fried fish and chicken. I almost bought them there on the spot, but decided it may be a better idea if I went shopping for a deep fryer first.
A trip to Wal-Mart brought into my knowledge a wide range of deep fryers with a multitude of functions. Ultimately, however, I decided against it due to the time needed to clean up all the oil. My perspective in the last few months regarding clean up has changed, as evinced by a previous journal entry in which I described a renewed interest in cooking. But anyway, I had a deep fryer now. And although I have not yet used it myself, Kelly has enjoyed cooking chicken, potatoes, french fries, etc. Today, she and I went shopping and I bought a few packets of cod fillets and some batter mix. I believe we will probably have ourselves a fish fry soon.
Also, Mom got me a set of cast iron cookware. This was really just an impulse idea I had when Mom asked if there was anything specific I wanted for my birthday. It was something which I had previously thought would be interesting, and now that I have it I'm glad its something I requested. Kelly is afraid to cook with cast iron, so this is something which I am the sole experimenter. Is that even a real word? It is now, I guess. But anyway, searching for a reason to use it, I fixed Kelly breakfast in bed the other day, and she even pretended to enjoy it. I fixed her an omelette, which is something I haven't done in probably two and a half years. Back when I worked midnight shifts for the Arc, I usually wouldn't have anything to do during the morning hours. So instead of sitting around with my thumb up my ass and serving cold boring cereal, I experimented with various breakfast creations.
So now I am very interested in cast iron cooking. Although not specifically related to cast iron itself, I bought the fixings today for a taco feast. I bought a package of corn flour tortillas, some ninety-five percent lean ground beef, taco seasonings, fresh whole jalepenos, refried beans, some Spanish rice, and hot sauce. I was going to purchase something called "Dave's Special Insanity Sauce" based solely on its name, but the ten dollar a bottle price tag had me looking for something a little less flamboyant. We'll see how it goes. I believe thats what I'm going to fix tonight (I told Kelly that dinner would be prepared by me), and I considered inviting Nathan but I didn't want to disappoint him if it didn't turn out right.
I have to also extend thanks to Kristy and Aunt Kathy as well. They were also nice enough to get me presents because they're swell like that.
