grokking in fullness

I saw the mongoose again on my way home from work this morning. Actually, the mongoose is in all probability a ground hog, but until I can catch it and confirm it under more close scientific scrutiny, I can't truly be sure. Having not spent many summers at this house, I'm not sure whether the amount of wildlife I'm seeing is normal, or related to the drought. I've been up to my neck in racoons, possums, cats, frogs, flies, mongooses (or is it mongeese?), and the what have you. Maybe its because the creek behind my house is the only place to get water.

My critter curiousity had quite a feast the other day when I was watering the lawn. I was spraying under some trees when I heard an angry hissing. It was nearly dark, so I couldn't see the grass all that well. Perplexed, I sprayed in the area again, and this time caught sight of some strange looking creature that looked like a twisting leaf and hissed like an angry snake. At once I assumed it was a king cobra come to join the animal ji'had, so I made sure to hit it was a good dose of water. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a bat.

A baseball bat?!?

No, a real bat. The kind that turn into vampires. And this vampire was one angry motherfucker. I'm not sure if he was injured or just screwing off to get out of work for the day, but he didn't seem like he was about to fly anywhere. Naturally I began to annoy the bat as best I could... for scientific purposes, of course. Pictures are below.

Picture 1: A full width picture of the bat.

Picture 2: My hand next to the bat for a size comparison.

Picture 3: Poking the bat with a stick. Note the bat's silly, pretend-angry expression.

After the bat and I were done playing, I left him to go on his merry way. I came back out the next morning, but he had either flown off or was eaten by the mongoose. Either way, no more flappy friend for me.

Thats really all I have to report for right now. Koby's party is tonight. I've been asked to do an official news report, which I am happy to do. Look for an update and pictures soon. Time to get some sleep.
